apple tower

Check out this gargantuan sweet treat my sisters Lane and Jamie shipped to my apple pie-lovin' dad for Christmas--frozen in a cooler (the pie, not Dad). We baked the 7-inch-tall monster last night and then ate it all up ... well, almost. It's from some little cute-sounding restaurant in some little cute-sounding midwestern town. Paula Deen's boys voted it #1 best apple pie in the country. I can see why: that caramel/walnut topping is seriously something else, and there's something super fun and exciting about cooking/consuming a dessert this unusually (unnaturally?) massive.

Where does one find the recipe for this monster? My husband is an apple pie freak, and this would be a great leveraging agent in future discussions about shoe purchases!

Well, let me share some wisdom when it comes to this little...rather, big...gem. I saw it on the Food Network quite some time ago and thought it to be the perfect gift for 1)the worlds hardest person to shop for since he buys EVERYTHING he wants on Ebay, and 2)the worlds biggest apple pie fanatic.
I bought it on the website of an oh so charming restaurant and inn, called The Blue Owl, located in the tiny town of Kimmswick, Missouri. Their web address is just www.theblueowl.com. From the main page, go to the gift shop, and order away!
I ordered the entire pie, which is only $35. Don't be fooled though, cuz the shipping on that thing costs a pretty penny (it weights 15 lbs. -- yeah, a pie that weighs 15 lbs). They overnight/2nd day air it to you so it arrives fresh and ready for cooking.
However, you can just buy the cookbook for about $12, which I believe contains the recipe for the infamous Levee High Apple Pie. But, I knew that 1)my dad would never make it and 2) being home for only a few days, I didn't have time to do a test run first, muchless make it. Besides, I think it was more novel for it to come from the kitchen of the person who dreamt up such an amazing idea.
So there you go. My only regret is that I wasn't home long enough to consume it...but I hear it was very tasty indeed!
