stuff we did AZ: Hotel Valley Ho

I snagged a short stay for the two of us at this cool hotel in old town Scottsdale. Originally built in 1956, the Hotel Valley Ho (how's that for a great name?) recently underwent a renovation that maintains its funky Jetsonian vibe, but gives it a refined, modern look and swanky feel. When my sister and I spied it last spring, I knew I had to take C back with me.

Naturally, he flipped. The surprise was a total success. If you're in the area, it's worth giving this little mid-century gem a gander. Use the ladies' room by the spa on the second floor. We opted to eat at Grimaldi's, but I hear the hotel restaurant is pretty good, too. So maybe stop by for dinner if you're not up for an overnighter.

gorgeous. i got to stay at a hotel with a similar idea in marfa, texas (cool little art town in the middle of nowhere, featuring the donald judd permanent exhibitions). it's called the thunderbird hotel (http://www.thunderbirdmarfa.com/)... you should definitely take a gander.

thanks for sharing the images, the hotel, and the idea.

I love that nothing looks like it has changed since 1956! Very cool. Did they play Frank Sinatra music? If not, then they should.
I want to go to a cocktail party here.

While I was in Design school, we had the oppurtunity to go take a tour of Valley Ho after it re-opened. It really is spectacular and an icon of Scottsdale. I love that even after the renovation that it still kept most of it's charm and history. My mom grew up in the Arcadia district (which is close to the hotel, at the base of Camelback mountain) and went to Scottsdale High in the late 60's. How amazing would it be to go back in time to see the orignal in its hayday!

P.S. Grimaldi's is my favorite. The pizza is the best in AZ.

I love it! I'm so glad you finally went. Perfect surprise for C, and he is such a fun person to surprise. Good job on keeping the secret--I think it was a major success!
