andrew bush + cars

In the late 1980s and throughout the '90s, photographer Andrew Bush rigged a 4-by-5-inch camera to the passenger side of his vehicle and snapped photos of the other cars (and drivers) he pulled up next to on the streets of California.

This idea is brilliant. It is so telling. And so fitting for the car-centric western U.S. See much of the exhibit online here. I also like this review from 1997.

Be sure to check out the matter-of-fact titles of his works like "Man finding his way south at 65 mph on Interstate 5 near Wildcat Canyon, California, on a Sunday in 1993."

p.s. I'm also obsessed with this project he did which will get more "air time" later.

Cars used to be so beautiful.. but right now I'm in love with my little mazda that get 36 MPG... otherwise I would die at the pump.

I wonder if the people in the pictures ever sued him or if he somehow got their permission to use photos of them?

This IS brilliant. And daring. It must have been fun for him, driving around.. pulling up to the car next to him..

So telling. Wouldn't you love to see your parents back in the day in their first car? Cool.

i love this work. when i was younger, i loved starring at people from my safe spot in the back seat with the slightly tinted windows of my mom's van. but now i can't really do that anymore. :)
