words of wisdom

couch

Like most, I read "The Glass Castle" a while ago. It was pretty good. For better or worse, my favorite quote didn't involve the beauty/struggle of the Joshua Tree or living on the border of turbulence and order. Instead it was this, from the crazy mom:

"Every household," she said, "needs one piece of furniture in really bad taste."

I think I can't help but agree.

Yes, yes! Once of my favorite quotes from Rita Konig touches upon the same idea: http://www.frolic-blog.com/frolic/2008/02/everyone-is-all.html

I find that my favorite homes to be in often have no awareness of design. The owners just know how to make their space feel like home and I like being there.

Ah... so true. I have something from my grandma that I normally wouldn't place out. But, it reminds me of her SO much that I have to keep it out on display. Thanks for the reminder!

Have you read the "Half Broke Horse"? It is the sequel to "The Glass Castle". Loved it.

What if you have four or five things in bad taste...does it make your house even better? :)

Love that quote. Although you already know that I thought Glass Castle, while a fascinating story, was poorly written.
