siena

Stop No. 6: Siena

Call me crazy, but I'd rather do Siena than Florence any day. So that's what happened. Just an hour or so away, this smaller university town has much of the same appeal---walled-in city, medieval-in-appearance, fashionable, artisically inspiring---but without the masses ... and David's backside. Siena offers fun sandwich stops, tons of stationery and paper shops, shoe stores galore and what's arguably Italy's very best piazza---which I didn't get a good photo of. Plus, Siena's Duomo (which was built in rivalry with Florence's huge Duomo, much like the Chrysler and Empire State Building faceoff) is my favorite cathedral in all of Italy. We loved it here. Probably one of our favorite stops because it's easy to feel like you're part of the city's beat.

These photographs are beautiful. Your blues are always stand-out. What kind of camera do you use? Editing software? Gorgeous! Italy is definitely on my wish list.

Thank you, Cheryl! I use a Sony Alpha100 DSLR that I truly enjoy, and I think all of these were shot with its standard 18-70 lens. It's a great beginner slr.

I do very little Photoshopping--usually just a little lightening up and adding a tad of contrast. Mostly because I don't know how to do more, but also because I'm all about preserving things the way they actually look.

I can't take credit for that blue, it was all Mother Nature. :)

I'm dying to go to Italy. I will add this to my imaginary itinerary. My husband keeps saying "when the dollar is stronger" which doesn't sound very promising.

I've always been a fan of Siena! I remember having a delicious late breakfast in that piazza.

I felt the same way about Siena - one of the best cities in Europe! And the duomo there was my favorite of all the churches I visited! My husband and I are planning a trip within the next year (hopefully) - and a lot of your stops are on our list, too! Did you stay in hotels? I would love to hear your hotel recommendations sometime! Absolutely love your photos - especially the arch!

I studied in Florence for 6 months so I have a little place in my heart for it, but siena is beautiful! and the people are much more friendly to tourists!

the best thing about siene's duomo is the crazy black and white stripes (if I'm remembering right). Your pictures are fantastic!
